Histadrut calls mass meeting in Tel Aviv - 10,000 activists to attend

According to this report in the daily financial newspaper Globes, the Israeli national trade union centre Histadrut has called a mass meeting to take place at its headquarters this evening in Tel Aviv.  No fewer than 10,000 union activists are expected to attend in what will be one of the largest manifestations of union power the country has seen in decades.

The event is part of Histadrut leader Ofer Ein’s “public declaration of support for the tent protest on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv,” according to the report.

An interesting development is the decision to deflect criticism that Histadrut only represents powerful and well-organized workplaces — this time by inviting speakers from smaller workers committees, as well as the women’s movement, Na’amat.  Some on the Israeli left have been critical of the Histadrut’s engagement (or lack of engagement) with the wave of social protest sweeping the country, and this has resulted in, among others, the “National Left” setting up a protest tent at the Histadrut headquarters itself.  According to reports, Histadrut officials took down the protestors’ signs and called the police on them.

Meanwhile, the long-running doctors’ strike (more than 137 days old) in Israel continues, though the union head has called off his hunger strike after ten days, according to this report in the Jerusalem Post.  There is some hope that the sides are getting closer and an agreement may soon be reached.
