Israeli NGO intervenes to help Palestinian workers win back wages

Kav La’Oved is an Israeli NGO that does fantastic work in support of the most vulnerable workers.  This week it published an extraordinary account of the plight of 140 Palestinian workers employed by the Swedish company, Soda Club.

Last year, Kav La’Oved was successful in helping the Palestinian workers achieve equal pay with their Israeli counterparts.

But last month, their lives were shattered when the company dismissed them all - and then failed to pay their final month’s wages.

The Kav La’Oved account of the story, which involves Israeli and Palestinian workers, the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions, Israeli labour law, the issue of precarious employment,  and a foreign company behaving badly shows the complexity of the issues faced by Palestinian workers.

Anyone who thinks that this is all just about illegal Jewish settlements and army roadblocks misses the point.

Unions, unionists should consider donating money to Kav La’Oved

Palestinian workers suffer on a whole range of issues and the work of NGOs — including those based in Israel — is vital for their protection.

If you or your union wants to do something concrete and practical to support workers like these, donate money to Kav La’Oved.
